New IPL 2023 Rule – Impact Player Rule

BCCI introduced the new Impact Player rule ahead of the 16th edition of the IPL, which allows every team to replace one of their on-field players with any of the four substitutes anytime during the match. Some of the features of the Impact Player are:

1. The Impact player is the 12th player in the team and may be substituted for any member of the starting eleven at any time.
2. Impact Player has to be an Indian player unless there are fewer than four overseas players in the playing XI.
3. Before the toss, teams must list four substitutes in addition to their starting X1, with only one serving as an impact player.
4. The captain of each team has the power to nominate the Impact player and decide when they want him to bat. The Impact player can be chosen to play at the start of an inning, at the end of an over, when a batter retires, or when a wicket falls.
5. The player, who the Impact Player replaces can no longer take part in the remainder of the match and is also not allowed to return as a substitute fielder unless it is a retired batter.
6. Impact players cannot act as a captain.
7. The teams are allowed to use one Impact player per match. However, it is not compulsory to make use of the Impact Player.
8. If a player sustains an injury while fielding mid-over, and is replaced by the Impact player, then he can no longer take part in the match.
9. If an Impact player gets injured during the match, a substitute fielder is allowed to field in place of the injured player only if the umpires are satisfied.

• Upon a catch dismissal, the incoming batsman will take the strike, except if it’s the last ball of the over.
