Mohammed Siraj made history in the Asia Cup 2023 final against Sri Lanka on Sunday, September 17. He did something that no Indian had ever done before in a One Day International (ODI) cricket match. He took 4 wickets in just one over. Siraj had a fantastic start with the new ball, which is unusual for Indian fast bowlers these days. He quickly dismissed some of the top Sri Lankan batsmen.
Even though spin bowling seemed to be more important in this match, Siraj stood out because of his ability to make the ball swing and use the pitch smartly to outplay Sri Lanka. He was bowling very fast, and the Sri Lankan batsmen had a tough time dealing with him in the intense final at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Now, let’s take a look at the important records that Mohammad Siraj broke during the Asia Cup 2023 final:
1. Fastest ODI five-wicket haul
Indian fast bowler Mohammad Siraj took five wickets in a one-day international (ODI) match for the first time during the Asia Cup 2023 final in Colombo. He did it in just 16 deliveries, which is as fast as the former Sri Lankan bowler Chaminda Vaas, who also achieved this feat in 2003 against Bangladesh. So, now both Siraj and Vaas share the record for the quickest five-wicket haul in ODIs, each doing it in just 16 balls.
2. Fastest Bowler to Record 50 ODI Wickets
Siraj did a great job in a cricket game. He took 50 wickets in one-day international matches quite fast, just a bit slower than Ajantha Mendis from Sri Lanka. He bowled really fast and got four wickets in only one over. He caught Pathum Nissanka with a fantastic catch by Ravindra Jadeja. After that, he got Sadeera Samarawickrama out on the third ball of his over. Then, he made Charith Asalanka hit the ball right into Ishan Kishan’s hands on the very next throw.
3. Six-wicket Haul
Mohammed Siraj did something very special in the men’s ODI Asia Cup final. He took six wickets in one game, just like Ajantha Mendis did before. Siraj’s excellent bowling helped India win their eighth title by defeating Sri Lanka by a big 10-wicket margin at the R. Premadasa Stadium. This also made Siraj the 11th Indian bowler to get six wickets in an ODI match.
4. Best Bowling Figures
Siraj did really well in the Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka in 2023. He bowled superbly and took 6 wickets for just 21 runs. This is the fourth-best performance by an Indian bowler and the 31st-best overall in the Asia Cup’s history. Siraj made history with his fantastic bowling. In his seven overs, he got six wickets while using the new ball. Right now, India hasn’t won the match yet, but it seems like they have a good chance of winning comfortably.
5. Four wickets in an over
Siraj achieved something unique for an Indian bowler, and only three others in ODI cricket have done it before. He managed to dismiss four Sri Lankan batsmen in a single over. He came very close to getting a hat-trick but missed it. Nevertheless, he is now the first Indian bowler to ever take four wickets in just one over. Siraj’s second over began with him getting Pathum Nissanka out on the very first ball.
6. Most wickets in the first 10 overs by an Indian
Siraj did something special by taking five wickets in only 16 balls, which is as fast as Vaas and USA’s Ali Khan have done before. Siraj also holds the record for taking the most wickets for India in the first 10 overs of an ODI match since 2002.
